May Day to Memorial Day Memories

May stirs indelible memories of my father

My father became a pioneer in the air cargo industry and helped design cargo handling equipment for the 747 Jumbo Jets in 1969. He went on to develop load restraint systems for the race car and auto transport industry after starting his own company in 1980. He was the John Wayne in my life. As the oldest of five kids, I witnessed the younger version who took me and my brother to Florida Gator football games to watch his younger brothers play and coach. He headed the little league in our town while we played on fields he helped build. He helped me get my first job out of college at JFK International Airport and later invited me to join him at the family business until corporate opportunities opened up for me, thanks much in part to his reputation that opened doors for me. He was born on May first and served in the Navy at the end of WWII, thus my family recognizes his legacy throughout the month of May every year.

He taught me how to cane pole fish in the Everglades when I was but a school kid. He loved to cook country breakfasts on the weekends. His father, Poppa, likewise shared their Georgia roots from the family’ hardscrabble days during the Depression until they migrated to Miami by 1940. Their legacy inspires my stories and many of my characters and love for time-lost traditions and slower paced life, and a strong sense of family.

So let’s welcome May.
