What is the story about the dog days of summer?
Is dog days of summer a metaphor?
Many people think the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” is an idiom in which the words don’t literally mean what they say, but the truth is that when you learn the origins of the term, it was quite literal for them. Technically, people referred to this time of year as the “Days of the Dog Star.”
It was the Ancient Greeks who first coined the phrase, using it to track the months. The Greeks found that Sirius, the brightest star, rose in the Northern Hemisphere, marking the year’s hottest days, typically in late July to early August.
